How to make a leather bag, even if you've never made anything
A beginner's guide to hand-stitching your first leather bag.
By Lil, founder of Kit Atelier
I've set aside 5,000 kits at half price, so more Aussies can try making their own. When they're gone, the offer ends.
The $3,000 designer look, hand-stitched by you in genuine leather for under $200.
Pre-cut, pre-punched and ready to stitch. No sewing machine, no experience needed.
- Step-by-step video tutorial
- Free delivery Australia-wide
- 100-day money-back guarantee
The hard parts of leathercraft are cutting accurately and punching even stitch holes. Both are done before your kit arrives, so what's left is the enjoyable part: stitching it together by hand, with a video to follow.
Most beginners finish in 3 to 6 hours, over a weekend or a few evenings. Here's how it works.
What you need to make a leather bag
Everything you need comes in the box. You don't need a sewing machine or any leatherworking tools of your own.
Each Kit Atelier kit includes:
- Premium genuine leather, pre-cut to shape
- Pre-punched stitch holes, so every stitch lines up
- All the hardware for the bag
- Needles, thread and glue
- The tools needed for assembly
- A step-by-step video tutorial made for complete beginners
- Help from a real person within 24 hours if you get stuck
At home, you only need a clear table, good light, and a pair of scissors to trim thread.
Nervous about starting? Watch how easy it is
Every kit comes with a step-by-step video. Tap play to see exactly what you'll be making, at your own pace.
You're covered by our 100-Day "I Made It" Guarantee. Start your kit. If you get stuck, we'll help you finish. If you still don't love it, send it back within 100 days for a full refund, even if you've started stitching.
Genuine leather, not plastic: how to tell the difference
Many DIY bag kits are made from PU, often sold as "vegan leather". It is a plastic coating on a fabric backing. It costs less, and it does not age the way leather does.
Three quick checks:
- The edge. Real leather has a fibrous, suede-like cut edge. PU shows a thin plastic layer over woven fabric.
- The grain. Real leather has small natural variations. PU has a pattern that repeats perfectly.
- The description. Look for "genuine leather" or "cowhide". "PU", "vegan leather" and "faux leather" all mean plastic.
Every Kit Atelier kit is genuine cowhide. If you are going to spend an afternoon making a bag, it should be one worth carrying for years.

The one stitch you need to learn
Hand-stitched leather bags use a single technique called the saddle stitch. Once you can do it, you can make the whole bag.
A saddle stitch uses one length of thread with a needle on each end. Both needles pass through every hole, one from each side, so each stitch is locked from both directions.
- Thread a needle onto each end of your thread.
- Pass one needle through the first hole and pull until the thread is even on both sides.
- Push the left needle through the next hole.
- Push the right needle through that same hole, from the other side.
- Pull both ends snug. Repeat to the end of the seam.
This is why hand-stitched leather lasts. A machine stitch can unravel if one thread breaks. A saddle stitch holds, because each stitch is independent.
Your first few stitches will feel slow. By the end of the first seam, most people have found a rhythm.
How a leather bag comes together
Every bag follows the same five stages. Your kit's video walks you through each one for your design.
- Lay out the pieces. Unpack the kit and match each leather piece to the video. It takes ten minutes and saves confusion later.
- Stitch the small parts first. Pockets, tabs and strap ends are short seams. They are your practice run.
- Attach the hardware. Clasps, rings and feet go on while the panels are still flat and easy to handle.
- Join the body. Stitch the front, back, sides and base together. This is when flat leather becomes a bag.
- Add handles and straps. Finish, trim your threads, and it's ready to carry.
A few steps use the glue included in your kit. The video shows you exactly where.
You can stop between any two stages. Many people make their bag over two or three evenings.

Premium leather, without the brand mark-up
Luxury brands can sell a bag for around 20 times what it costs to make. Most of that price pays for things that never touch the bag: flagship stores, advertising and the logo.
A Kit Atelier kit skips all of that. You pay for premium genuine leather and quality hardware, without the brand mark-up, and the making is yours.

Five beginner mistakes, and how to avoid them
None of these will ruin your bag, and all are easy to avoid.
- Pulling stitches too tight. Leather puckers if you yank. Pull until the thread sits flat, then stop.
- Uneven tension. Pull both needles with the same force each time, and your stitch line will look machine-neat.
- Skipping ahead of the video. Some pieces must go on in order. Watch each step once before you stitch it.
- Thread that's too long. A very long thread tangles. If your video suggests a length, use it.
- Rushing the finish. Take your time on the last stitches and thread ends. They are what you'll see every day.
If you miss a hole or cross a thread, unpick back to the mistake and carry on. The holes are already punched, so nothing is damaged.
How to care for your leather bag
A genuine leather bag will last for years with very little care.
- Wipe off dust and marks with a soft, dry cloth.
- Keep it away from prolonged direct sun and heat, which dry leather out.
- If it gets wet, blot it and let it dry naturally. Never use a hairdryer.
- Store it stuffed with tissue, in a dust bag or pillowcase, so it holds its shape.
- Condition it once or twice a year with a leather conditioner. Test on a hidden spot first.
This is the difference between leather and PU "vegan leather". PU peels and cracks with age. Real leather softens and develops character.
